Humpback Whale 2024 SOLD
This Humpback whale is a commission piece and is 3.5m long and approximate weight of 250kg.
To create this piece was quite a challenge in many aspects, to build such a big whale out of driftwood and to have the strength to hold its own weight was one factor and for it to maintain its shape and strength in transport was another.
There was a lot of engineering for the structure as well for the supports.
Also a lot of time spent searching for the right wood.
There was over 300 pieces used for this beautiful whale and some of it is quite unique.
All the black wood used was actually red lronbark that had been under water for maybe a hundred years which had slightly petrified it and turned it into a black colour right through.
The lighter wood had been bleached from the sun and had some great weathered patterns and even barnacles still attached.

Lady in a Skeleton Dress

I headed to Cape York in search of some unique pieces of wood.
With permission l had access to a large cattle station and from a previous excursion to this area l headed back to where l had seen some extremely rare and beautiful wood pieces from a Normanby Skeleton Tree! (only growing in approximately 20km radius of this area)
The age of some of these pieces of wood collected is estimated at over a century old. The colours are extraordinary and fade from white to red and into a weathered grey.
l have left some of the natural grey and also hand polished selected parts of each individual piece.
“Lady in Skeleton Dress” has been challenging and satisfying experience.
Finished in Carnauba wax to accentuate the wood colour and grain.
Dimensions: 1.9m tall .7m wide.
